The course Floral Obsession is an exploration in floral conditions as a matter of design in Architecture. Reaching from the topological manyfold figures of Floral conditions, to Surface Articulation (veining, rippling, frazzling, smooth etc.) to the coloration and various chromatic effects. It is not just about creating an understanding of the beautiful conditions that can be created by the use of floral forms, but about explorations rooted within contemporary scientific insights.
The manyfold expression of form can result in various spatial conditions that will be explored by the students for their potentials as a performative surface as well as for the Economy of Form.

After further analyzing the flower we have found the following characteristics, along with the ones mentioned before:

- Palmate veined. Veins diverge from near the leaf base where the stem and spadix are, and radiate towards the edge of the apex of the leaf.
- On the face of the spathe the veins project outwardly while the “skin” sinks inward. Hence the corrugated appearance.
- The direction of the veins influence the leaf’s plication.
- Colors: Yellow(spadix), red(mature spathe), green(during maturing process of spadix and spathe), purple(during maturing process of spathe)
- Mature leaves are a strong, solid and vibrant red, while in the maturing process the leaves have a combination of a deep purple, green and red color.
- Main color, red which means: attention, attraction, standing out.
- The veins are the vascular tissue (conducting tissue) of the leaf. They are examples of pattern formation through ramification, that pattern is called venation. Our main concept.
- Venation subtype: craspedodromous, veins stretch up to the margin of the leaf.
- Leaf morphology: heteroblasty, characteristic in which a plant displays different shapes and/or colored leaves while young and older.
- Spathe creates a spiral section around spadix.

From these findings we have developed certain initial ideas of what kind of spaces and or atmospheres we would like to accomplish within this courses project. The three image columns above, architecture, ambience and nature, illustrate some of those ideas. Be it the spatial bounding structure, the density of said structure for the light ambiance inside, the levels within the project, the colors and such. Along with these ideas we looked at other natural examples of venation such as the roots of a tree for further inspiration.

To further understand the topological modeling program Topmod, we have developed a series of models with the purpose of understanding and grasping the newly learned commands and also experimenting with these models to find their pros and cons making an initial selection, or set of, for further analysis and design.

Through this model testing we found, as with all testing, positive and negative results. The positive results were considered as such because they had further potential for spatial, structural and or surface use. The ones that were considered negative where considered so because we felt they were “dead ends” or contained geometry errors which would not be useful for further analysis.

The two models selected where one created through the multi-face command which created a set of interior tunnels, and the other through poche which created an interesting corrugated surface. These where selected because not only did we see further design possibilities in them, but we saw architectural interpretations of the parameters of our Anthurium Andreanum within them. For example, the tunnels could be seen as the veins that run through the project and the corrugated surface as an interpretation of our leaf’s corrugation.

Anthurium Andreanum is the name of the flower we have chosen to scrutinize for the purpose of developing our butterfly house for this course. This flower has many strong characteristic that can be applied to an architectural representation.

The Anthurium Andreanum is a vivid flower, generally found in a vibrant red color with a bright yellow spadix. Its strongest visual characteristic is its venation. It is a palm-netted, palmate- veined flower where its main veins diverge from near the leaf base where the stem and spadix are, and radiate towards the edge of the leaf. The strength of the veins influence the spathe’s corrugation and their direction influence their plication.

As we can see in the panel, during its growth process the spathe wraps around the spadix until completely unwrapping itself and pulling away from it when the flower is ready for pollination. The skin of the spathe is materially strong yet flexible, something we would like to utilize on our project. Not only is its surface visually smooth yet rough due to its corrugation and almost plastic like material but its red color adds to its pleasant appearance. Red is known as a powerful and attractive color.

An interesting characteristic of the spathe of this flower is its translucency. In spite of its strong material and color it manages to allow a sufficient amount of light through.

Issue for the lecture: Based on the Paper Botany Bay I will talk about three main issues in the realm of Flowers interesting as a base for specultations about architectural opportunities within this field: Spatial conditions (Anatomy, Morphology, Manyfolds, Topologies, differentiaon of space, sepals and petals, whorls and creeeping, coloration, ornament as space, deep articulation etc) Structural conditions (Veinings, Canopys, performative surfaces, sound structure by manyfold conditions, heads and stems, Flower bouquets, Parasites (Orchids), surface articulation, ripples and corrugations etc) Material conditions (cell compounds, veining, colorations, differentiated surfaces, fibrous patterns, fibers, cells etc) Floral sensibilities: (Colorations, gradients, bouquets, surface conditions, spatial conditions and flowers. Dear Students,

the end of our course is approaching on high speed and we are very curious about your final results. So here are some guidelines and comments for the end of the Floral Obsession course.
First of all I would like to congratulate all of you for the great effort you put into this course, and the great results you shared with us on this blog. Keep up the momentum generated so far and we will end with excellent results. For the last couple of days we are planning to proceed as follows: I will post now some guidelines for the material we want to see for the final presentation.

We will start on Wednesday 27th 10am by doing a tablecrit, walking from project to project, discussing the results, and giving last advises before the review. The afternoon is reserved for you working on the presentation: Plans Graphics & More.
Wednesday afternoon you will also have the opportunity to mill a component of your project.

Thursday is the day: Presentations...2pm to 6pm

Some technical things about the presentation format:

One sheet presenting your approach, your findings in the exploration of floral entities and how you aplied them to your project

Coloration/Chromatics:
We would like all of you to rely on your individual specific coloration scheme of your projects, concerning the renderings, as we want to see the geometry of your projects clearly, Of course you can put your eye on how to work with light and shadow to achieve specific cinematic effects and atmospheres. No bump mappings, as those are not a clear representation of the geometry you created originally. Physical Sky, Mental Ray renderings in Maya would be great, but are not a must. Render with the rendering Engine in Maya you feel comfortable with. Silhouette representations of humans to recognize the scale (and Silhouettes only!)

Plans/Sections

1 longitudinal & 1 lateral section + plans as needed to explain your project

I posted a couple of links in the right column of the blog. This links lead to a variety of graphic representations of curvilinear forms in terms of plans and sections. I would encourage you to pic this up as a source of inspiration for the graphical appearance of your plans and sections. All of you are skilled, educated architects, so I guess you know how plans and sections should look, but it would be a great achievement to understand how a graphical 2D representation of complex curved geometries in architecture could be represented with the traditional tools of architecture.

Presentation
We will rely on the concept of presenting the work over the blog. Copy also your presentation on a memory stick to show it via the beamer. No printing required. Let´s call this our contribution to sustainable teaching, and we have all the projects documented together on the net. My advise to you: make a copy of the entire blog on a CD or Harddrive, who knows how long this will stay online. By making a copy you can store this course away.

We are really looking forward to see all of you and your projects.

Lets do the last weightlifting together and end this course with excellence, elegance and beauty...
